Prairie du Chien High School hosted the inaugural National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Competition on Saturday in the new fieldhouse.

Archers from 10 schools competed in the event, with 135 total archers. Schools included Anamosa High School and Middle School, Cashton, Columbus, East Dubuque High School, Portage Middle School, Prairie du Chien High School and Middle School, Spring Hill Middle School of Wisconsin Dells, St. Peter’s Lutheran Middle School of Reedsburg, and Stratford, Wis.

“Next year, we will try to schedule our tournament in early January,” said Advisor Brent Seamans. “We could have 300 archers.”

Seamans said the competition was a bullseye tournament with four flights that began at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. There were archers shooting at 20 targets and most flights were filled. He also noted that there were about 100 spectators for each of the four flights. Also, 26 parent volunteers helped with the event.

Prairie du Chien’s top finishers included:

Devan Jacobson (9th grade)- 1st Place High School Male Division - 1st out of 20.

Sadie Torgerson (8th grade)- 4th Place Middle School Female Division - 4th out of 27.

Taia Dressler (6th grade)  (2018 National Qualifier) - 5th Place Middle School Female Division - 5th out of 27.

John Titlebach (11th grade) - 5th Place High School Male Division.

The Prairie du Chien team competes in three team tournaments a year, including Prairie du Chien, Cashton and the State Tournament in Wisconsin Dells. This year’s State Tournament will be held on Friday, March 29. There will be a 3D competition at noon and a bullseye shoot at 2:30.

The Prairie du Chien team shoots every Monday and Friday morning at Bluff View from December until the end of April.

The team continues to gain in popularity and Seamans said 13 shooters competed this season on their own in several tournaments in addition to the three team events. Parents drove these archers to the tournaments.

“We’ve never had that in the past,” said Seamans. “The parents and kids are really dedicating themselves to the sport.”

Some highlights throughout the season included:

Taia Dressler, who took fifth place in the East Dubuque Tournament on Dec. 15 in the Girls Middle School Division. She scored 262 out of 300.

Dressler won the Sparta Classic with a score of 280 out of 300.

Sadie Torgerson shot a personal best on Jan. 19 in the Bellevue, Iowa Tournament by hitting 259 out of 300 in the Girls Middle School Division.

Torgerson also took third on Feb. 16 in the Wildcat Archery 3D Invitational in Central City, Iowa.

In addition to thanking the parents and volunteers, Seamans said the team also greatly appreciates the sponsors, including:

Gold - Jones Accounting Service

Gold - NCS Gunsmithing and Sales

Gold - Bluff Country Long Spurs

Gold - Cabela’s

Silver - Leisure Time

Bronze - Ted Pennekamp

The archery team is for students in fourth through 12th grade. If anyone is interested in either donating to the Prairie du Chien Archery Team or volunteering, they can contact Brent Seamans at seamansbr@pdc.k12.wi.us.
