Gallagher, the world-famous comedian and prop comic known for smashing watermelons as part of his act, will perform in Prairie du Chien April 6.

Gallagher uses his Sledge-O-Matic to smash watermelon and other foods to smithereens during his shows. Be prepared to take cover.

World-famous comedian Gallagher became a household name by smashing watermelons during his highly-rated HBO TV specials. His signature sketch is a pitch for the “Sledge-O-Matic,” a large wooden mallet that he uses to smash a variety of food items and other objects, culminating with a watermelon.

Gallagher is coming to share his hilarious antics and insights and his incredibly creative word play in Prairie du Chien on Saturday, April 6. One 8 p.m. performance is scheduled at the Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center on the grounds of the Prairie du Chien High School.

Advanced tickets are recommended and can be purchased at paac.ludus.com or by calling the high school at 326-3700, ext. 3312. Tickets in varying levels of the “splash zone” are available.

The Gallagher show is the first of its kind in the new theatre venue, where it’s said there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

Nick Gilberts, the current vice president of the Prairie du Chien Area School Board, is one of the driving forces behind bringing Gallagher to the community.

“After going to the first performance in the performing arts center, ‘Seussical,’ I was brainstorming ideas on how to get community members into the new theatre. I heard that Gallagher and Artie Fletcher were on a “Jokes on You” comedy tour and were going to be in La Crosse and Dubuque in January,” Gilberts said. “After seeing they were booked that weekend, I saw they were returning to Wisconsin in April and had a performance in Milwaukee. I emailed Artie and asked about the possibility of them to make a stop in Prairie du Chien and perform in our brand new theatre, and he quickly wrote back and said yes.”

Shortly after that, District Administrator Bob Smudde worked out the details in booking the opportunity with the Hall of Fame comedian.

“My brother, Nate, and I went to see Gallagher in La Crosse in January and he has not missed a beat,” Gilberts added. “His jokes are fresh and funnier than ever, his viewpoints on life in general are real, and he still makes one heck of a mess with his Sledge-O-Matic.”

Though Artie will not accompany Gallagher in Prairie du Chien, since he had to back out of the tour, Gallagher himself will not disappoint. Certainly, having done 3,500 live shows to capacity crowds, the prop comic is sure to entertain his loyal and new fans alike. Get ready to fall out of your chairs in laughter.

Though there have been some concerns about bringing someone who is known to smash almost every food imaginable in to the brand new theatre, Gilberts is not worried.

“Rest assured, there are protocols, sent from Gallagher, in place, to cover the stage and everything in the ‘splash zone’ in plastic, to protect this brand new venue, and to make clean up much easier,” he said.

Gilberts also noted that a small group of volunteers from his organization, Scream Xtreme, are assisting the school with the performance that night.

Gallagher was the no. 1 comedian in ticket sales and ratings for nearly 15 years. He literally invented television stand-up comedy, having had 14 Showtime specials. Before him, no one ever had that level of interaction with a live audience. Some of his specials have included: Uncensored Evening, Mad as Hell, That’s Stupid, Stuck in the 60s, Over Your Head, The Messiest of Overboard, The Leap Year Marathon, Smashing Cheeseheads and the most recent Sledge-O-Matic.com.
