Crawford County winter maintenance costs up 47 percent for salt and sand

This winter has been quite a bit more costly than last year in terms of snow removal efforts by Crawford County.

Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock said there are 134 miles of county roadways and 190 miles of state highways within the county.

“It appears at this time to be a 55% increase in costs to the county system and a 38% increase to the state system in comparison to the 2017-2018 winter season for the same time period,” said Pelock. “It is about a 47% increase overall.”

During the 2017-2018 winter season from Oct. 1 through Feb. 26, the total winter maintenance costs for the county road system were $270,554.50. The costs so far this season are $420,045.01, which is an increase of $149,490.51.

From Oct. 1 through Feb. 26, the costs for the state highway system in the county were $444,728.37 in 2017-2018. The costs for the 2018-2019 season were $613,296.81, an increase of $168,568.44.

Last winter, 532.7 tons of salt were used for the county system at a cost of $37,012.35. This winter, 1,011.63 tons of salt was applied at a cost of $72,940.71.

In 2017-2018, 4,363.32 tons of sand was used at a cost of $109,94.91 for the county system. This winter, 4,994.88 tons of sand was used at a cost of $136,110.08.

For the state highway system within the county, 2,800 tons of sand was used last winter at a cost of $197,848 from Oct. 1 through Feb. 26. This winter, 3,200 tons of salt was used at a cost of $228,960 for the state highway system.

For the state system in the county last winter, 198.56 tons of sand was applied at a cost of $5,023.60. This winter, 296.01 tons of sand was used at a cost of $8,068.06.

The price of salt last winter was $70.66 per ton. The price this winter is $71.55 per ton.
