8 year old raises money for water in South Sudan
Kye Czajkowski Higgins, 8, of Prairie du Chien, is considered an Amazing Kid by Water for South Sudan for his efforts to raise funds for the organization.
Water for South Sudan (WFSS) works with passionate individuals from around the globe, now including an enthusiastic 8 year old from Prairie du Chien.
The organization’s donors contribute in ways large and small to make its work possible. Its most recent monthly newsletter highlighted local boy, Kye Czajkowski Higgins, as an “Amazing Kid” for his efforts to support clean water, hygiene and sanitation projects in South Sudan.
Last year, his brother, Logan, read “A Long Walk to Water,” a book by Linda Sue Park based on WFSS founder Salva Dut’s experience as a “Lost Boy of Sudan.” Kye then decided to read the book and was moved to start a fundraiser to help.
“He wrote a letter to Santa and asked for money instead of Christmas gifts,” mom Lara added. “Kye explained in his letter that he wasn’t asking for the money for himself, but to help raise money for wells in South Sudan.” Kye also asked for support from extended family and his parents’ co-workers. Once family friends heard what he was doing, they wanted to help too.
His advice to kids who want to fundraise but aren’t sure how to start: “All you have to do is put your mind to it and you can do anything you want.”
Kye loves to read, play Fortnight and go hiking. At the young age of 8, Kye already knows he wants to become a plastic surgeon when he grows up. His reason why is, “So I can help people with deformations.”
