The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, located at 323 South River Park Drive, is opening its doors every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 - 5 p.m. beginning Feb. 6, for after-school homework help.

The pilot program, organized by Family Helping Hands, offers students seeking extra help with homework or just a safe, comfortable environment to unwind in after school. The group contacted the Chamber and asked if the Welcome Center was available.

Chamber Director and Family Helping Hands board member Mandy Ludovissy explained the project. "Originally when the community convinced the city to save the  DNR-owned building from demolition,  it is now utilized by the Chamber, which operates it as a Welcome Center for tourists but was always intended to be a comunity center as well."

Ludovissy went on to say, "Family Helping Hands committee chose the Chamber's Welcome Center because of its close proximity to Clayton Ridge School, availability of open space, tables, a restroom, and kitchen. The group chose Wednesdays to host the event because it is an evening that is set-aside activity free in the school district."

Volunteers will be on hand to help students with homework. Healthy snacks will be provided, and additional supplies needed for larger homework projects can be procured on an as needed basis.

"Students' and teachers' busy  schedules during school hours do not always allow time for students who are challenged by a particular learning process. Often times a busy household with multiple family members does not provide  a quiet atmosphere or the space   needed to spread out on a table to work on a larger project," commented Ludovissy.

"We have ample space for students to work and WiFi is available," she said.

Are you a history enthusiast, a geometry whiz or a master of the English language? Consider volunteering your time and talent on Wednesday afternoon to help out.

Adult volunteers are welcome and needed to make the event a success.

A thorough background check is required of all adults interested in becoming a volunteer for the program.

If you are a student interested in receiving guidance for your studies or just a comfortable space to read a book or check your social media, or are an adult who would like to volunteer for the program, you may contact Kari Harbaugh at: the Family Resource Center, (563) 252-3215 or by e-mail at Family.resource.center@guttenberghospital.org
