Counterfeit bills passed around

Recently, there was a counterfeit $100 bill that was attempted to be passed at a Prairie du Chien restaurant.
Police Chief Kyle Teynor said the investigation is ongoing, and that a woman (the suspect) was photographed but she has not been found or identified from the photograph.
Over the last few weeks, counterfeit bills have been passed or attempted to be passed throughout the Tri-state area, said Teynor. The bill attempted to be passed at the Prairie du Chien restaurant had Chinese lettering on it.
“Businesses should invest in markers to test the bills or look for obvious watermarks or fiber strips in the bills to gauge the authenticity,” he said. “Bills with Chinese lettering should always be denied.”
Bills with Chinese lettering are actually fairly common in the counterfeit world, noted Teynor.
“In previous counterfeit cases we have referred these bills to the Secret Service Office in Madison and they confirm or deny the authenticity of the bill,” he said. “The Chinese printed bills are one of the more commonly presented bills.”
