The Eastman United Methodist Church Youth Group organized a Christmas bake sale throughout December to help offset the costs of a mission trip to Hopkinsville, Ky., June 22-29.

Exactly $6,710 was raised by the kids who are going and their families, who reside in Eastman, Prairie du Chien and Wauzeka. Around $5,275 of that was profit. Ninety percent of the funds was made in pre-sales, while some was garnered at a stand set up at Johnson’s One Stop in Seneca Dec. 29.

“They sold an insane amount of baked goods,” said parent Cindy Payne.

On Dec. 27 and 28, the youth group gathered at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church to bake, assemble, package and distribute. The church’s pews were lined with pies, breads, cookie trays, rolls, seasoned pretzels, puppy chow and more goodies than they could have ever imagined.

The following are the numbers, by baked good: 975 sugar cookies, 720 peanut butter cookies, 500 M&M cookies, 720 peanut butter balls, 500 Oreo balls, 500 dipped pretzels, 30 pans of fudge, 750 turtles, 700 Rice Krispie bars, 90 canisters of ranch pretzels, 125 canisters of puppy chow, 225 sheets of lefse, 89 pies, 64 loaves of cranberry bread, 54 loaves of chocolate chip zucchini bread and 82 loaves of cinnamon bread.

The intent of the June trip, organized by Sidekick Missions, is to assist low-income residents with home repairs. Participants involve youth in grades 8 through 12, including: Trenton Childs and Gavin Whalen, of Prairie du Chien; Emma Kapinus, Lizzie Bird, Gracie Hooker, Riley Mezera and Madison Baumgartner, all of Wauzeka; and Emma Payne, Lucas Kilburg, Andrew Aspenson, Anya Aspenson, Ryan Beers, Riley Hubanks, Abby Feye, Vince Feye, Jayden Glassbrenner and Thomas Jones, all of Eastman.
