Darrel Howard Gilkes, 69, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, after a brief illness. 

Darrel was born to parents George and Viola (Yost) Gilkes on Aug. 6, 1949. 

He spent his elementary years in Brodtville. Darrel was a graduate of West Grant High School in 1968. He met his best friend Karen Beinborn in 1987. They eventually married on Oct. 14, 2005. The two spent many years fishing, canoeing and camping. The couple had a blended family of four children. After many years of being an over-the-road truck driver, Darrel retired in 2014 due to health reasons. He then purchased Mr. Mouse Cheese, a local cheese curd distributing business.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Brian (Christina) Gilkes, of Oshkosh; daughter, Lynn Gilkes, of Fennimore; step-son Jim (Jenny Murphy) Beinborn, of McFarland; step-daughter, Paula (John) Quackenbush, of Prairie du Chien; a brother Franklin Gilkes; as well as 10 grandchildren, several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 8, at the town of Prairie du Chien Fire Hall, with a burial at the later date.
