Trick-or-treating in Prairie du Chien just got a whole lot better than usual.

This Saturday afternoon, Oct. 27, families are invited to downtown Prairie du Chien for Fall Family Fun Day. From 1 to 3 p.m., costumed children are welcome to trick or treat at more than 25 different businesses. All establishments participating will be designated with an orange jack-o-lantern in their window, said Lou Davis, The Pickett Fence owner and PdC Main Street member.

Treat givers will include these establishments:

Mississippi Meats, Radio Shack, Nelson True Value, Walgreens, Bob’s Bar, The Local Oven, Panka Shoe Store, Jim’s Bar, Back Stage Pass, Prairie du Chien Public Library, Something For Everyone, JC Party Store, Rockweiler’s Appliance, Wall Street, Edward Jones, A Cut Above, Ideal Decorating, Café Hope, Sports World, The Pickett Fence, Stark’s Sport Shop, The Broken Ladder, Century 21, The Planted Tree, The Sawmill Saloon, Muddy Waters Pizza Pub, Rowdy’s Bar and River District Hotel.

Before trick-or-treating, a costume contest will be held at the Halls of Terror building on St. Feriole Island. Sign-up is at noon, and judging will start at 12:30. This is sponsored by Scream Xtreme and the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Also, from noon to 4 p.m., there will be gourd painting available in the Sports World parking lot, along with music by Dan Moris. The Prairie du Chien Fire Department will have fire trucks for kids to explore from 1 to 4 p.m.

From 2 to 4 p.m., event-goers may enjoy a lights-on haunted house tour at the Halls of Terror, for a small fee.

Free tours of the newly-remodeled Prairie du Chien Public Library will be available during trick-or-treating as well.

Take some time at The Local Oven and The Pickett Fence to vote for your favorite scarecrow or witch displayed at a number of downtown businesses. These were sponsored by the participating merchants as part of a PdC Main Street contest. The winner, announced after Halloween, will take home a big scarecrow trophy.

Trick-or-treating downtown has been enjoyed by over 300 children and their families each year, thanks to the organization of the main street organization. With the addition of more afternoon activities, and depending on the weather, the host, PdC Main Street, is anticipating a bigger experience than ever Oct. 27.

If interested in volunteering for this event or to have other activities considered in the future, contact PdC Main Street through Lou Davis at The Pickett Fence, 326-4593, or Greg Cerven at The Local Oven, (608) 875-5813.
