An alleged drunken driver was arrested in Mount Hope, for his fifth offense OWI, after he drove through an accident scene Monday night, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department said.

On Oct. 8, just before 7:30 p.m., the sheriff’s department received a call from the Mount Hope Fire Department of a possible intoxicated driver. Traffic was restricted along Pleasant Valley Road, east of South Ridge Road in Little Grant Township, because a semi-truck was being recovered from a slideoff.

Robert Bausch, 56, of rural Mount Hope, drove up to the firemen in his 2005 GMC pickup. One of the men noticed Bausch appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants. Bausch was told several times not to drive through the accident scene. Yet, according to the sheriff’s report, Bausch stopped by one of the fire trucks, urinated, got back in his truck and, despite being told not to pass through, tried to do so.

The firemen prevented Bausch from driving through the scene and attempted to block his truck in, so he could not leave. However, Bausch drove around the trucks and left, just as the deputy was arriving, the report stated.

Bausch was then seen driving through his pasture toward his house. The arresting deputy located Bausch near his home on Pleasant Valley Road, in the pasture, near a gate and his pickup. The deputy attempted to speak with him and asked him to perform field sobriety tests. Bausch said he would, but made an attempt to get back to his truck.

Fearing Bausch would get in the truck and attempt to drive again, the deputy acted toward taking Bausch into custody. Bausch resisted, but was eventually taken to the ground and handcuffed.

According to the sheriff’s department, he was arrested for operating while intoxicated-fifth offense and resisting arrest. He was also cited for disobeying a traffic officer.

He was taken to a local hospital for a legal blood draw and then booked into the Grant County Jail.
