On the front cover of the Crawford County plat book are pictures of the county fair, which is the recipient of the proceeds from book sales.

The Crawford County plat book is updated and for sale to interested hunters, property owners, emergency service departments and citizens in general. Proceeds from the booklet benefit the Crawford County Fair, according to fair coordinator, Amanda Griswold.

Updated every five years, a plat book consists of maps showing rural property outlines of parcels over five acres, the number of acres and the name of the landowner. Locally-owned, state and federal lands are shown. Township names, section numbers, range numbers, lakes and rivers are included as well.

Additionally, the booklet has a government directory, 4-H and UW-Extension contacts, a public hunting grounds map, snowmobile and bike route maps, points of interest and more.

Griswold said the county zoning office makes all the mapping changes to the booklet each time it is published, in collaboration with the fair committee. Mapping Solutions is the company that sells the advertising and prints it.

“The process starts at the beginning of the year. We launch in August, so the information is about three months old by the time we put the book on sale,” Griswold shared.

Booklets are sold through the Crawford County UW-Extension Office and at some area banks. County wall maps are also available for sale. Anyone interested in purchasing an e-edition of the plat book may contact the extension office at 326-0223 for instructions.

Griswold noted that, for an additional fee, there is also an app individuals can purchase that allows management of land with custom pinpoints and downloading of the maps for offline use. The app is available through Mapping Solutions; to get it, contact the extension office at the number previously mentioned.

Griswold added, all these make unique Christmas gift ideas for those people who seem to already have everything.
