The Clayton Ridge School board heard updates on the building project, received reports from administrators, and approved hirings and a resignation when members met in regular session on Sept. 13 at the high school library.

President John Heying called the meeting to order with members Christine Aulwes, Ellen Johnson, Kathy Ihde, Alicia Helle and Mike Finnegan on hand.

An update on the current building project was given by three representatives from Estes Construction.

Area Education Agency member Dr. Bill Withers and administrator Pat Heiderscheit gave an update on changes at AEA.

Superintendent Shane Wahls reported on the start of the new school year, and Principal Andy Peterson discussed building construction, technology upgrades, homecoming activities, his mentorship in Specialized Academic Instruction, middle school positive behavioral interventions and supports, and athletic activities.

A written report was received from Steve Hoff of the Iowa Virtual Academy concerning enrollment, staff, strong start initiatives and a back-to-school picnic. The board unanimously voted to deny 97 open enrollment requests into the Iowa Virtual Academy due to resident district denials, diversity plans and no proper special education program to meet the needs of the student.

An early graduation request from Mazzy Godden was approved.

Calista Harbaugh was hired as assistant drill team coach.

Heather Meyer was hired as cheerleading coach.

Jim Pfaffly was hired as a professional learning community strategist for grades 6-12 science.

Pete Purman was approved as a volunteer football coach.

The board accepted the resignation of Mary Seifert as board secretary effective Oct. 1.

A list of sale items was approved for an auction to be held in October.

The board approved the transfer of $3,100 from the general fund to the activity fund to purchase athletic safety equipment.
