Harlan F. Hass, 93, of rural McGregor, died Saturday, Sept. 8,  at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Harlan was born Oct. 29, 1924, on the family farm near McGregor. He was the son of Fred and Pearl (Thompson) Hass. He was baptized at the EUB church in Monona. Harlan graduated with the class of 1941 in Monona. In August of 1945, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served until September of 1946. On Oct. 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dolores Jean Peters in Monona. 

Harlan lived and worked most of his life on the family farm. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers fan. He served on the Condemnation Board of Clayton County, Farm Bureau Board, treasurer for the building committee that constructed the current United Methodist Church in 1986 and the Monona City Cemetery Board. He sang in the church choir and a men’s quartet which sang for many funerals and events. He was a member of the Living Faith United Methodist Church in Monona, was a 65-year member of Farm Bureau, a 55-year member of Tri-City Golf Association, a member of the Postville Bowling Association and the Iowa Horse Shoe Association. 

Harlan was an Iowa State Fair Horseshoe Champion, is in the Postville bowling hall of fame, was a one-time Tri-City Golf champion, was a three-sport letter winner in high school, played on the Monona town baseball team and the John Deere softball team. 

Harlan is survived by two sons, Steve (Shelby) Hass of McGregor, Rick (Roberta) Hass of McGregor and a daughter, Linda (Duane) Van Winkle of Washington. Also surviving are seven grandchildren Shane Hass, Shanell (Brian) Freeseman, Rita (Matt) Breuer, Kyle (Lauren) Hass, Drew (Maggie Woznicki) Van Winkle, Heath Van Winkle and Mallory Van Winkle; three great-grandchildren Jenna and Logan Freeseman and Kamryn Breuer; a brother Ramon Hass of Columbus, Ind.; a brother-in-law William Peters and wife Joanne of Guttenburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dolores; daughter Susan Hass; sister Margery (Hass) Wachter and mother-in-law Ruby (Levenhagen Peters) Topel. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Living Faith United Methodist Church in Monona with the Rev. Deb Parkinson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, and one hour before services at the church. Internment will be at the Monona Cemetery with military rites.
