A Boscobel man was lodged in Crawford County Jail after an alleged assault in Prairie du Chien Aug. 21, according to authorities.

At about 6:30 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department was called to 806 E. Lockwood Ct. for a report of suspicious activity.

Upon arrival, the police officers met an adult male outside of the residence whose face was covered in blood. Upon investigation, officers learned the victim was inside his residence sitting on his couch when an adult male came into the house without permission and physically assaulted the victim. The suspect was armed with a loaded handgun and pointed it at the victim. The suspect then proceeded to hit the victim on the head and face with the handgun. The suspect then fired two shots into the wall of the residence before fleeing in a vehicle.

While on scene, officers identified the suspect as 35-year-old Richard “Rusty” Achenbach, of Boscobel.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the incident and a possible direction of travel of the suspect.

A short time later, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Achenbach near Wauzeka.

Achenbach was arrested and the firearm used in the crime was recovered. Achenbach was then transported to jail.

Charges were requested for endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, carrying an unauthorized concealed weapon, recklessly endangering safety, battery, burglary, and criminal damage to property, with enhancers of being intoxicated and using a firearm in the commission of a crime. Achenbach was also issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.
