Cecilia M. Valley Steinberg, 101, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully with her loving daughters by her side on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Benson, Ariz.

She was born June 17, 1917, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Charles and Celia (Strnad) Valley. She began working at the Crawford County Courthouse while in high school in all departments. She graduated top of her class in 1935. She married the love of her life, Milton “Shorty” Steinberg on January 30, 1937. Together they raised four fabulous children.

In 1965, Cece went back to work at the courthouse, retiring in 1982. Shorty and Cece loved life and adventure. They taught and played accordion, square danced, traveled the country and spent 17 winters in Arizona. Cece was still playing accordion at 100 years old. Shorty preceded her in death on March 29, 1999. Anyone who ever met her loved her immediately; she had a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed.

Cecilia is survived by her children, Charles (Shirley), Marilyn Lawson, Paul (Pamela) and Alicia (John) Cejka; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; and one great great great grandchild; five step great grandchildren; and 13 step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Velma, Bernadette and Betty Jean; a son-in-law, William Lawson; a great grandson-in-law, Jessie; and a great great granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Friday, from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
