The Guttenberg Municipal Swimming Pool will close with a splash on Sunday evening, Aug. 19, when the public is invited to a special closing ceremony to bid farewell to the aging structure prior to the start of the new pool construction.

Would you like to be the last swimmer to do a cannonball or high dive into the old pool? If so, sign up for the honor each time you visit the pool starting Sunday, Aug. 12. Two people will be randomly selected from the sign-up list for the honors.

The honor of the first cannonball and first dive in the brand new pool next season will also be selected from the same list.

The closing ceremony on Aug. 19 will begin at 7 p.m., followed by cake and lemonade. “Families are encouraged to attend and witness history with the closing of the 44-year-old pool,” invite organizers.

Brief remarks will include a history of the effort in 1974 to build the community’s first swimming pool, reflections on its role in youth leadership development and in ensuring family/youth water safety for the community for two generations. A reflection of community gratitude will conclude the program.

Pool admission will be free that day. An open swim will begin at 6 p.m. that evening prior to the ceremony and will be the last of the season. Users will be invited to line up and begin taking their last dives and jumps prior to the program at 7 p.m.

The closing ceremony was organized by Wave of the Future Committee volunteers as a thank-you to everyone who has built and sustained the current pool.

The rain  date is 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.
