Dean A. Cornford, 81, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, at Rock Haven Nursing Home. 

He was born in Prairie du Chien on Oct. 18, 1936, the son of John and Marcella (Valley) Cornford. He attended St. Gabriel Catholic School in Prairie du Chien and graduated from Prairie High School in 1954. As a teenager he spent his summers working in Waunakee at a pea cannery. After graduating from high school Dean moved to Janesville to work at General Motors and retired as a general supervisor. He married Janice R. Shaffer on June 23, 1956, in Prairie du Chien. 

He served his community as a County Board Supervisor for 10 years, Chairman of the County Public Safety and Justice Committee, Vice Chairman of the County Planning and Development Committee, and Chairman of the Town Planning and Zoning Committee. He also served as the Supervisor of the Janesville Town Board for 14 years. 

Dean loved to restore cars, restoring many, his favorite was a 1926 Oakland. He was a member of the All American Oakland Chapter, the Pontiac Oakland Club International and the Model T Club of America. He enjoyed spending time at the Rock River Thresheree where he could shoot the breeze with his collector car buddies and participate in the Labor Day parade. Dean was also an avid coin collector and went to many coin auctions. Dean and Janice lived in their cabin home on 25 acres and farmed for many years.

Dean is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice; two children, Sheree (Paul Casey) Cornford and Mark (Barb) Cornford; three grandchildren: Cole (Rachel Sandee) Davis, Dillon Davis and Amber Davis; great grandchild, Huck Davis, son of Cole and Rachel; three brothers: Tom (Bev) Cornford, Kenny (Lois) Cornford, and Jimmy (Lucy) Cornford; brother-in-law, Calvin Shaffer; and many nieces and nephews and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Phil and David.
