Dorothea D. Horsfall, 65, of Waukon, Iowa, died Thursday, March 15, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

Dorothea Dolores Horsfall was born Aug. 11, 1952, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Ray and Dolores Sophie (Christiansen) Harms. Her parents later divorced and she was raised by her mother and stepfather Leroy Wood. Dorothea grew up in Olin, Iowa, and in 1971, graduated from high school. She attended art school in Florida and then returned home to Olin, where she worked various secretarial and administrative jobs. In 1979, she moved to Lansing, IA, and met Paul Leland Horsfall, Jr.; the couple married on May 30, 1981, at the United Methodist Church in Lansing. Since then, Dorothea worked with Paul at their Horsfall’s Variety Store in Lansing.

As a member of the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Chien, she was involved in many Bible study groups and volunteered to lead groups at Thornton Manor in Lansing and Makee Manor in Waukon. Dorothea volunteered often to help seniors, either by providing transportation to appointments or preparing the monthly senior meals at church. An awesome artist, she made many drawings, wrote poetry, and sewed blankets and curtains. She loved baking bread and cookies. Dorothea had a wonderfully big heart, as evident by the many rescue dogs she adopted; she also couldn’t get enough of pugs. She never missed an opportunity to send a card or leave a gift at someone’s door, possessing a knack for knowing just the right moment when somebody might need that little pick-me-up.

She is survived by her husband Paul, of Waukon; three children Jeremy Blakley, of Omaha, Neb., Tara (Dave) Lund, of Monona, Iowa, and Heather Gulrud, of Decorah, Iowa; four grandchildren Joseph Lund and Ashley, Brandon, and Cael Gulrud; siblings Dorrene Smith, of Lake City, Minn., Danney (Angie) Harms, of Olin, Iowa, Donna (Kim) Gilliland, Davina (Kenneth) Matthews, and Dana Reed, all of Prairie du Chien, and Darla Klinkenborg, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her stepfather Leroy Wood, of Prairie du Chien; two sisters-in-law Cathy Harms, of Tipton, Iowa, and Sandy Horsfall, of Denver, Colo.; and father- and mother-in-law Paul, Sr. and Maxine Horsfall, of Fla.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her father Donald Harms; mother Dolores Harris; brother Darrell Harms; stepmother Judy Wood; and two brothers-in-law: Pete Smith and Jon Horsfall.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 26, at 11 a.m., at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Chien, with Pastor Kevin Dick officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon, Iowa. Friends may greet the family Sunday, March 25, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa. Casketbearers are Jeremy Blakley, Dave and Joe Lund, Brandon, and Cael Gulrud, Daniel Wood, Trevor Underhile, and Blaze Niemeyer. Online condolences may be left at www.martinfunerals.com.
