Owen Edward Kann, age 89, of Guttenberg, IA, died Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. He was born on June 16, 1928 on the home farm outside of Guttenberg, the son of Gregor and Anna (Miller) Kann.

Owen received his education from the local country school and farmed for most of his life. On January 31, 1951, Owen was united in marriage with Geraldine “Gerry” Schmelzer in Garnavillo, IA. Owen was proud of the farm where he and Gerry successfully raised their children by working together. He also had a lifelong interest in civics and loved the state of Iowa. Owen received official recognition from the Governor of the State of Iowa as an “Outstanding Iowan” for serving more than 50 years as an elected Trustee for Jefferson Township in Clayton County. He also served as an official on the election board for many years.

Owen will be forever loved and cherished by his eight children, Connie (Steve) Anderegg, Roger (Diane) Kann, Kathy (Fred) Lansing, Julie (Eric) Nelson, Carole (Donald) Mackey, Lisa (Steve) Bernhard, Sharon Jaeschke, and Kenneth (Leslie) Kann; 21 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marie Dickman, Edna Schmelzer, Shirley Schmelzer, Lydia Kann, Helen Kann, and Betty Kann; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Owen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geraldine in 1985; infant son, Thomas Owen; infant daughter, Vicky Jeanette; siblings, Jeanette Berns, Arlene St. John, Virgil “Bud” Kann, Frederick “Fritz” Kann, Donald Kann, and Duane Kann; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Kann, Bernadette Stroschein, Anita Schmelzer, Leonilla Moser; brothers-in-law, Wilfred Berns, Ray St. John, Henry Dickman, Lawrence Stroschein, Lorin Schmelzer, Joseph Schmelzer, Harvey Moser, and Jim Schmelzer.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, where the family received friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, and one hour before serviced at church.  Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 28, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg, IA.
