Maxine Viola Greener, 96 of Marquette, died Monday, Feb. 26, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor. Maxine had been receiving care there after a fall at her home October 2017.

 

Maxine was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Lakota, the daughter of Korse and Ella (Thaves) Ellman. She was united in marriage on July 1, 1940, at Estherville, to Louis W. Greener.

 

Maxine resided in Marquette, the majority of her life. She worked part time at the Marquette Hotel and later at the Pink Elephant. She also attended night classes in Prairie du Chien, Wis., where she received her high school diploma in June 1970. Maxine took great pride in her tomato plants, spending numerous hours in her blackberry patch on the hill and could usually be found digging weeds in her yard. She was a lifetime member of the Women’s American Legion Auxiliary since 1958.  Maxine was also a faithful member of the Saint Mary Catholic Church.

 

Maxine is survived by one son Joseph (Juanita) Greener, of Des Moines, and many other family members.

 

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Korse and Ella (Thaves) Ellman; husband, Louis W. Greener in 2004; son, Larry L. Greener in 2003; and brother, Vincent Ellman.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor, Iowa. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa. The Rev. Nils de Jesus Hernandez will be the celebrant. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. before mass time at the church on Thursday. Thornburg–Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of McGregor, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to: American Heart Association, National Sclerosis or St. Mary’s Church.
