Two newcomers will advance in the Wauzeka-Steuben School Board election, since they received more votes than the incumbent in Tuesday’s primary.

Mara Hird and Kathleen Schwartz earned 113 votes and 71 votes, respectively, from district residents, edging the board president and three-term board member, Bill Marfilius, from the race, according to unofficial Crawford County results. Now, Hird and Schwartz will challenge one another in April to determine who will fill Marfilius’ seat on the board.

In total, 241 voters went to the polls in the district Tuesday, which accounts for less than 9 percent of the registered voters in the villages of Wauzeka and Steuben and the six townships that make up the district.

State election results

The only other judges on Crawford County ballots was that for Justice of the Supreme Court.

At the Wisconsin state level, Sauk County Judge Michael Screnock and Milwaukee County Judge Rebecca Dallet emerged and will compete for a 10-year term on the state’s highest court in the April 3 general election.

The two candidates prevailed in Tuesday’s primary election, topping Madison attorney Tim Burns, who was eliminated from the race.

Locally, the results mirrored the state numbers. In Crawford County, Dallet and Screnock received 399 and 498 votes, respectively, while Burns ended up with 282.

Countywide, 13.5 percent of registered voters showed up to vote Tuesday.

The Crawford County Board of Canvassers will be meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 9 a.m. in Room 204 at the Crawford County Administration Building for the purpose of canvassing votes from the spring primary.
