Proposed trail

along Great River Road taking its first steps

By Ted Pennekamp

There is a movement afoot for a proposed multi-use trail along the Great River Road (Highway 35) in Crawford and Vernon counties.

Mary Rae of the Vernon-Crawford Trail Task Force said the proposed trail would be a bicycle-pedestrian trail along or adjacent to the Great River Road corridor, and that some parts of the trail would go up into the bluff land and come back down again via roads that intersect with the Great River Road.

Rae noted that the proposed trail has the support of the Crawford County Board, the Vernon County Board, the Ferryville Village Board and the Bridgeport Town Board. The task force is also seeking support of other governmental entities along the way in Crawford and Vernon counties.

“We have a great deal of support and I can understand why as it’s a concept whose time has arrived. Why should someone need to have a car, a house or a boat to view or enjoy a resource that has had and continues to have such an impact on our country’s history,” said Rae. “And, above all, that it should be a safe way for families and individuals to be active in the outdoors in all four seasons along the River.”

Rae said that the Vernon-Crawford Trail Task Force will be working with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and that the DOT would install the trail should the project get approval.

The proposed trail project is in its very early stages and much planning and work is needed.

“Indeed, there are many obstacles to be confronted and, of course, money is the big one, but it can be done,” said Rae.

The task force will be drafting a letter of interest for area businesses and organizations to sign. Also, the Mississippi River Parkway Commission will be discussing the proposed project.

Other possible sources of support for the trail include people interested in the use of a trail, sporting and biking shops and possibly restaurants along the way. Hidden Valleys of Southwest Wisconsin, which promotes tourism in the region, has expressed their support, said Rae.

The next meeting of the Vernon-Crawford Trail Task Force is scheduled for March 27 at 2 p.m. in the De Soto Community Center. Rae said that everyone is welcome to attend and give ideas.
