McGregor’s Main Street got a bit brighter last week, as new banners were hung from the street light poles up and down the city’s historic main drag.

Three different designs are featured, including a red, orange and yellow banner emblazoned with “McGregor Historic District, Settled 1837.” Four images are shown on this banner: a sand bottle, in recognition of famous McGregor sand artist Andrew Clemens; a clown, in celebration of the city’s connection to the Ringling Brothers; the Clan MacGregor crest; and the paddle wheel symbol representing the Great River Road.

Another banner is bright blue, with the words “Dine, Shop, Enjoy.” Colorful shopping bags and a wine bottle and glass are also depicted, inviting people to visit the community’s unique shops, bars and restaurants.

The third banner says “Welcome” and includes images of a wine glass and utensils, a woman shopping, an artist’s palette and a saxophone. Together, the items—set off by blue, yellow, green and red stripes—highlight all that McGregor has to offer.

In addition to those placed along Main Street, new banners can also be seen on the McGregor riverfront. This design welcomes people to “Discover McGregor.” With flower, sun, leaf and snowflake artwork, each of the four seasons are represented.

McGregor artist Maureen Wild helped develop the four banner designs.

“It’s really exciting to see them all up,” she shared.

The decision to replace the banners was made this summer, when some were damaged in the July 19 tornado. Others had become faded over the years.

In total, 43 new banners (including some extras) were ordered, at a cost of $3,885, said Kris Eulberg, with McGregor Municipal Utilities.

The project received several contributions, including $1,200 from Dairyland Power, $500 from Clan McGregor for Community Enrichment (formerly Lions Club) and $250 from Alpine Communications. McGregor Municipal Utilities, through FEMA funds to replace the banners and hardware that were damaged by the tornado, contributed $973. The city of McGregor covered the remaining cost.

“It was a joint effort to replace them all,” Eulberg noted.
