Driver falls asleep, crashes on Highway 35
A driver fell asleep on his way to work last week and crashed his vehicle outside of Bloomington, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 5:50 p.m., the department was notified of a one-vehicle rollover on Highway 35 near Bloomington. Gerald Mayne, 39, of Lancaster, was driving north in his 2007 Suzuki XL7 SUV when, he said, he fell asleep and drove off the right side of the road. His SUV went through a fence and into a pasture, where he drove it a short distance before going back through the fence and striking an embankment, which caused the vehicle to go airborne. The Suzuki then impacted and rolled over before coming to a rest on its roof.
Mayne was issued citations for inattentive driving, no insurance and operating after revocation.
