Black ice is reportedly the reason a driver struck a light pole with his vehicle Saturday morning, Dec. 30, according to a news release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 11:42 a.m., several reports were made to dispatch that a vehicle had struck a Bridgeport Township light pole on Highway 18 north of Selch Road. The fallen light pole blocked several lanes of traffic for about a half-hour.

Authorities found that a west bound 2007 Dodge Ram pickup, owned and operated by Keith Loney, 66, of rural Prairie du Chien, struck the Wisconsin Department of Transportation pole. Loney claimed he hit black ice before colliding with the pole.

Loney’s vehicle was driven from the scene.

Assisting were several witnesses, the Prairie du Chien Police Department and the Crawford County Highway Department.

The accident remains under investigation.
