Darleen Lasse Johnston, 88, of Gays Mills, died on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua.

Darleen June Coleman was born on June 15, 1929, to George and Delia (Callaway) Coleman. She married Donald Lasse on Oct. 9, 1946, and they lived on his family farm in Richland Center for several years, before moving to Gays Mills, the town where she grew up, and she spent the rest of her life there. Darleen supported her family, working as a bartender in Ferryville for several years and was known by everyone in Gays Mills.

If anyone wanted to know anything about the history of Gays Mills, Darleen was the one to ask and she was always ready to talk about the town she loved. She owned the old hardware store in downtown Gays Mills, where she kept the many treasures she brought out for her rummage sales. She met and later married Richard Skolos. They were together for more than thirty years, enjoying life in the Kickapoo Valley.

She is survived by five children, Sandra Thomas, Donna Hays, Sharon (Tom) Caya, Donald (“Bert”) Lasse and Cheryl Meyers; and fourteen grandchildren, Gregory (Christine) Thomas, Terri Thomas, Wendy (Kevin) Smith, Michelle (Samuel Steiner) Hays, Matthew Hays, Chad (Susan) Caya, Jeremy (Dessa) Caya, Heather Caya, Krista Caya, Tania Lasse (Dennis) Hines, Jodi Lasse, Justin Lasse, Quinn (Roxana) Lasse, and Daniel Meyers; thirty great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;  and one brother, Larry Coleman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, William Lasse and Tammy Jo Johnston;  her husbands, Donald Lasse, James Johnston and Richard Skolos; and three brothers, Victor Coleman, Darold Coleman and Richard Coleman.

Funeral Services were held at noon, on Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Gays Mills. John Johnson officiated, and burial followed in the Gays Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or plants memorials are preferred. Online condolences may be offered at www.vossfh.com. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Gays Mills is serving the family.
