The Couleecap Food Pantry in Prairie du Chien is assembling enough holiday meal baskets this season to provide a Christmas dinner and all the trimmings for 200 households in need, according to Jann Sturmer, Couleecap clothing center and food programs coordinator.

Food pantry clients, families or individuals who find themselves in need for any reason are invited to stop by the food pantry on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m., to pick up a meal basket. The offering will be available until all 200 are gone.

Each meal basket will include a choice of meat (ham or pork roast), a bag of fresh potatoes, fresh oranges, the ingredients to make green bean casserole and other side dishes, and a dessert.

The inmates from the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution have been enlisted to volunteer with distributing the meals to those visiting the pantry Thursday morning.

Sturmer said area residents in need are encouraged to come early before the meals are gone.

On a related note, she said food pantry distribution will now be available at a new time, in addition to normal distribution hours. Thanks to the Prairie du Chien High School Key Club volunteering, there will be an added distribution time of the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For more information, call Sturmer at 326-2463.
