At its Dec. 4 meeting, the Monona Council approved a resolution for the voluntary annexation of 3.7 acres of land at the intersection of 125th Street and U.S. Highway 18/52.

The property includes two parcels, one of which the Overland Group plans to purchase for construction of a Dollar General Store. The other is a residential property.

City administrator Dan Canton said a notice has been published indicating the city’s intent to voluntarily annex the site. The county has also been notified. Now, he said, the Iowa Secretary of State’s office will be notified. Once they give the go-ahead, the city of Monona will notify utilities, the DOT, DNR and other pertinent entities that the property is within city limits.

At the meeting, the council also adopted an ordinance designating the zoning classification of the property for the Dollar General Store and the adjacent residential lot.

Taking the planning and zoning commission’s recommendation, the Dollar General Store property was zoned C1-A highway commercial, similar to other area retail businesses, like Fisk Farm and Home, said Canton.

The adjacent lot will be zoned R1 residential.

Police squad car

The council approved the purchase of a new vehicle for the Monona Police Department, opting for a 2017 Ford Police Interceptor, at a cost of $28,067, through Birdnow.

The bid was around $1,000 more than another bid the police department received, but the council felt it was important to support a local business.

A separate purchase will need to be made to equip the vehicle’s interior, but the council chose to seek other bids before making a decision on that.

Park vandalism

City council member Heather Lange cited an incident of vandalism at the city park in which the Christmas tree in the bandstand was tipped over. The lights were also damaged. The incident happened sometime between midnight and 10 a.m., on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Lange said she is gathering quotes for a trail camera for the park, after seeking advice from neighboring communities.

Those who have information about the incident are encouraged to call the Monona Police Department at (563) 539-4400 or Monona City Hall at (563) 539-2355. A $25 gift certificate to MJ’s Bar and Grill has been offered as a reward.
