A special event meant to spread the true spirit of Christmas to local families will feature an affordable Holiday Concert at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien. Michael J. Thoma and Friends will perform an evening of live Christmas music Saturday, Dec. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. The concert is the first of its kind at the rec center in modern years.

“With the hectic holiday season, we thought this would be a good time for parents, grandparents and kids to sit back, relax and enjoy some Christmas music,” Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich said. “This is a different kind of offering for parks and rec. We really think it’s going to be family-friendly.”

Thoma is from Waterloo, Iowa, and has performed shows at the Concerts in the Park on St. Feriole Island for several summers. Typically, he has 15 musicians in his full band. Yet, the ensemble performing Dec. 9 will be a five-piece, more intimate group.

Christmas concerts are a forte of Thoma’s and his band, which includes his daughter Trudy Perdrix. His earnest lyrics and carefully-crafted melodies are inspired by his upbringing on a farm in rural Iowa and the travels and wisdom that can only come with age. A skilled balladeer and catchy rock composer, Thoma’s roots music is not just a reflection of the Midwestern experience, but an insight into the human experience that we all share.

Two of the band’s albums, “Comin’ Home” and “Christmas in the Heartland,” have earned Roots Music Commission awards and a nice review from Country Music International. His 2009 song, “I have no gifts” has received airplay all over the globe.

Ulrich said this cozy Holiday Concert is intended to be a nice alternative to the live music of the bar scene. Complementary coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be served throughout the concert. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Hoffman Hall or at the door the day of the show. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.

Thoma said the band will play about 20 songs and spend some time sharing holiday stories and memories. “We hope to capture people’s attention. It’s always our hope people leave warm, friendly and in the spirit of Christmas,” he shared.
“We’ll link the present and the past. But the rest is a secret. You’ll have to come to the show to figure it out.”
