Brian Spielbauer

By Melissa Spielbauer Combs

Guttenberg native Brian Spielbauer has published his first book in a series of fantasy novels. The publication Tales of Lemuria: The Demon's Chamber debuted Sept. 1 of this year.

Monday, Dec. 4, will be a busy day for Brian. He will be in Guttenberg to speak with students at St. Mary's/IC School in the morning, and then will travel to Beckman High School in Dyersville in the late afternoon.

He will then return to Guttenberg to speak about his writing at the Guttenberg Public Library and will be available for a book signing from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Spielbauer has limited copies of the book and additional copies are available by ordering from Amazon.

Spielbauer grew up in Guttenberg, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from William Penn University, in Oskaloosa.  In 1996, he taught at St. Joseph's grade school in DeWitt. He later earned a Master of Arts degree in sports studies at Bemidji State University, in Bemidji, Minn. In 2002, he returned to William Penn University where he taught and coached for ten years. In 2016 he became Director of Athletics at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo.

When Brian was in sixth grade, he became fascinated with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series. He later began writing ideas for his own fantasy novels. The result of his dream is his first book in the series, The Demon's Chamber.

The Demon's Chamber is the story of Tegan and Telon, proud dwarf princes of Tunder Bin, the capitol dwarf city of Lemuria. The murder of their father leads Tegan and Telon on the path to the throne, but Tegan's wife is kidnapped by an ancient menace. He pursues the enemy, and his brother Telon stays to handle the affairs of the kingdom. Meanwhile, a traitor works with the enemy to bring the dwarf kingdoms to destruction. Brian says, "I love the dwarves and wanted them to have larger parts in the Lord of the Rings books and movies. I thought this would make a good area to create a story all their own."
