Jane Uppena, 68, of Cassville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, Nov. 24, at her home, after a courageous 31-plus year battle with cancer. 

 

She was born Nov. 22, 1949, in Prairie du Chien the daughter of William and Marguerite “Peg” (McClure) Fischer. Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien and attended Western Wisconsin Technical College in La Crosse. She married Dennis C. Uppena on May 3, 1969, at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Dennis was enlisted with the United States Navy and he and Jane were stationed in San Diego, and later Stockton, Calif. Dennis was deployed to Vietnam during the war. 

 

Later, they returned to Platteville, where Dennis finished his degree. In 1977, they moved to Cassville with their family. In 1982, Jane began her career as a CMA for Grant Community Clinic in Cassville, retiring after 24 years in 2006. Jane was a devoted member of St. Charles Catholic Church, its CCW, and St. Charles Cemetery board. She was also very active in the Cassville Sports Boosters Club and Riverette’s Homemakers’ Club. Jane dearly loved her family and keeping up with all of their activities. 

 

Surviving is her beloved husband, Dennis; their children: Mark (Heather Moore), Mike (Millie), Scott (Melissa) Uppena, Laura (Keith) Oyen, and Tom (Molly) Uppena; grandchildren: Will, Jack, Sophie, Larry, Tanner, Lily, Austin, Logan, Aidan, Emma, Brady, Carter, Matthew, Jonathan, Matthew, and one on the way; her sister, Judy (Bruce) Kieser; two brothers: Bill (Elaine), and Tom (Deanna) Fischer; the Uppena family: Carl (Sue), Carol (Richard) Schnering, Curt (Joann), Dolores (Mike) Everson, Diane (Jerry) Oppriecht, Donna (Randy) Kieler, and Jane (Carl) Orr; and many nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by a sister, Joan; a niece, Jill Uppena; and a nephew, Greg Fager.

 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father John Meinholz and Monsignor James Uppena officiating. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday, Nov. 27, from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville, and on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. In keeping with Jane’s wishes, family and friends are asked to wear their school colors to the visitation, as Jane supported all of her children and grandchildren’s school endeavors. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Jane Uppena Memorial Fund has been established. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory of Cassville is assisting the family.
