The Prairie du Chien School Board approved of the 2017-2018 budget at the District Budget Hearing Monday evening in the library meeting room in the high school.

The total levy will be $5,585,238, which is a 1.75 percent increase over the 2016-2017 levy of $5,489,327.

Total property valuation in the school district is $523,921,121, which is up from the $497,502,266 of 2016-2017.

The tax rate for school purposes will remain $10.66, the same as the past five school years. A tax rate of $10.66 means that the owner of a property valued at $100,000 will pay $1,066 in property taxes for school purposes. The owner of a $200,000 property will pay $2,132.

The revenue limit in state aid per student is $10,032. Last year, the revenue limit per student was $10,054. The revenue limit provides funding necessary for many items, including community supported programs, counseling services and intervention programs, as well as for attracting and retaining high quality educators, and providing for utility costs.

Part of the 2017-2018 budget is a 1.5 percent wage increase for non-teaching staff. The first half of the increase will be paid on Dec. 15. The second half will be paid on July 15. The teachers also received a wage increase that will be paid in two halves, Dec. 15 and July 15. The increase for teachers is based upon the compensation model for the Prairie du Chien School District. Teachers will receive an increase based upon years of service and numerous other factors. Therefore, some teachers will receive a higher percentage increase than others.
