A handicap accessible ramp was constructed on the back of the Brodtville Schoolhouse, where a bathroom addition stood previously. Plans are to build a small bathroom at the front of the building down the road. (Photos by Correne Martin)

The cracked and caving front steps were re-structured and re-cemented at the front entrance to the school.

Brodtville School Preservation Inc. has completed a significant scope of work at the one-room schoolhouse in Wyalusing Township in the past year and a half.

“I’m proud to say we really got a lot done this year,” said Joe Stagman, a member of the committee.

The 153-year-old school has been cleaned and painted inside, the front steps re-cemented, a new roof installed and a new handicap ramp built where the back addition previously stood. A clean-up day in July 2016 brought about 30 people to the property and was a big help in this process.

“The next thing on the agenda is water and sewer,” said Chuck Stagman, chair of the Brodtville School Preservation committee. He said they’ve been quoted $35 per foot for drilling and casing, “and we’re hoping we don’t have to go more than 100 feet to hit water.” The group is also looking at installing at least a 1,000-gallon holding tank as part of that project.

After water and sewer are established, Stagman and the preservation committee intend to install a restroom inside the current kitchen, at the southwest corner of the schoolhouse. The previous restroom at the rear was removed to make way for the handicap ramp access to the building.

Since they began fundraising, the group has received over $15,000 toward conserving the old building, acquired through over 40 personal and business donations, rent from a few private gatherings as well as proceeds raised at a soup and sandwich dinner.

They also plan to host a couple fundraisers in the spring of 2018, as an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 is still needed toward  preservation.

Anyone interested in donating toward the effort can make checks payable to the Brodtville School Preservation, c/o Chuck Stagman, 135 N. Bagley Ave., Bagley, WI 53801.
