LaVerne L. Troester (Mrs. Oscar Troester), 93, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. LaVerne was born November 3, 1923, near Clayton, Iowa. She was the daughter of Lester and Anna Fischer Mohning. LaVerne graduated from Garnavillo High School with the class of 1941. On December 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Oscar Troester at Peace Lutheran Church at Clayton. Three children were born to this union. 

Oscar and LaVerne farmed in the Guttenberg and Elkader area for a few years until purchasing their present farm near Garnavillo in 1954. After her children were older LaVerne became a cook (lunch lady) at the Garnavillo Schools for 25 years and worked part-time at the Kountry Manor and Rocky’s Resort. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. When her children were youngsters, she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Readlanders Club. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Pies were her specialty! If anyone went away from her table hungry it was their own fault. She was an avid card player, enjoyed gardening, needlework, cross-stitch, embroidering and was a meticulous housekeeper. Family was very important to LaVerne and she enjoyed spending time with them especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Mark (Rondee) Troester of Elkader; two daughters, Thelma “Tracy” (Tom) Madden of Rockwell, Iowa and Donna (John) Martin of Mason City; grandchildren, Jason (Amy) Madden, Tavi, (Mark) LeDuc, Jenna, (Brian) Powers, Andrew (Julie) Martin, Beth (Scott) Hockey, Christopher (Mandi) Martin, Steven (Katie) Martin, Anna (special friend, David) Troester, and Amos (fiancée, Tina) Troester; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Mohning of Garnavillo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Roland and Sharon Troester of Garnavillo and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar in 2006 and one brother, Loren Mohning. 

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Iowa with Rev. Gary Hatcher as the officiant.

There was a two-hour visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before services at the church on Friday. Burial followed at Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa. 

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elkader, Iowa assisted the family with arrangements.
