Terry Fredrick Maggert, 72, of Elkader, went to be with Jesus, his Savior, on Oct. 6, 2017.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at First Congregational Church, Elkader, conducted by Rev. Pastor Linda Hauschild.

Burial will follow at East Side Cemetery with full military honors.

Terry was born April 29, 1945, at the farm in Pony Hollow, outside Elkader, to Gail and Maxine "Pat" (Freeman) Maggert. He attended school at Central Community of Elkader, graduating in May 1963. He then enlisted and served four years in the United States Navy. Terry married Suzan Rae Grabowski in Rome, N.Y. on Sept. 23, 1967. To this union a son and daughter were born.

Terry worked for the Bell Phone System for 30 years, retiring in May 1998 in Bowling Green, Ky. He ventured back to Iowa in 2003, living near Guttenberg and Osterdock. He found pleasure and comfort in returning to his childhood church of First Congregational in Elkader.

In the late summer of 2017 Terry started renting a home outside of Elkader, where he found peace. He said, "I had a good life (some regrets); a wonderful wife in Sue, two healthy children, good friends, very proud to have served my country four years and to have been a Midwesterner growing up and being able to finish my journey in this place I love, Elkader."

Terry is survived by his son, Terry Maggert Jr. of Portland, Tenn.; daughter, Heidi S. Maggert of Tennessee; and a grandson, Teddy, age 10. He leaves behind four brothers, Kurt, Rich, Mick and Denny; nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his wife; parents; in-laws, Theodore "Ted" and Margaret "Peg" Grabowskil and sister, Sharon Lawson.
