Adults can get in on the fall fun this year with the third annual Halloween costume party at Guttenberg Golf & Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse. Music, games, bonfires, food and drink will entertain guests, who need not be club members to attend.

Entertainment will be provided by The After Party’s Alex Finch, who helps organize the annual event with his wife Ashley, Cindy and Chris Miller, and Sadie and Jason Hefel. The Millers started the tradition years ago with a Halloween birthday celebration at their home. The Hefels eventually volunteered to host at their own home. “Cindy and Chris brought their trailer full of Halloween supplies and décor to the house we were renting in Millville at that time. We decorated the basement and Jason built this impromptu cave off the deck,” Sadie recalled. “We played games, and everyone that came had a blast.”

When the party outgrew the Hefels’ home three years ago the group decided to hold it at the golf course, where the Hefels and the Millers are members. The Millers, who live in Cedar Rapids but have a home on the island, continue to help out by providing the supplies and making flyers for the event.

The Halloween party has historically been a fundraiser for a local cause, with the past several years benefitting the Guttenberg Fire Department and EMS. This year, free will donations will be accepted for the Wave of the Future swimming pool campaign. Admission to the event is free and snacks are provided, but guests are encouraged to make a contribution.

“Games are my favorite part,” smiled Sadie, reminiscing about parties past. There’s the classic plunger between the knees relay; the passing of an orange from person to person using only the neck and chin or a pretzel held by a q-tip in the mouth; and the cookie face game, where players attempt to get an oreo from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands. This year, Hefel even plans to get guests sitting at the bar involved in the fun. “There’s a bowl of candy corn at one end of the bar and an empty bowl at the other end, and each person at the bar has their own small bowl in front of them. Two teams race to move all the candy to the empty bowl using a spoon held in their mouths,” she explains. Her go-to tie-breaker is a race to empty a roll of toilet paper – like her other games, this one garners a lot of laughter from observers and participants alike.

Partygoers should plan to come in costume, as the stakes are higher than ever this year. Cash prizes will be awarded for the winners of a costume contest sponsored by the golf course. First place will be given $100, second place $50, and third place $25. The golf course will also offer specials on mixed drinks and beer at the bar. A free photo booth backdrop with props will be set up for capturing the memories made during the evening.

With the space provided by the golf course clubhouse, organizers are happy to be able to invite everyone in the community to get in the Halloween spirit. Entry is free and tickets are not required.
