National Newspaper Week Oct. 1-7 Mayor's proclamation for The Press

At the Oct. 2 meeting of the Guttenberg city council, Mayor Russ Loven read a proclamation that he authored, recognizing The Guttenberg Press during National Newspaper Week Oct. 1-7.
The mayor's proclamation read as follows:
Proclamation of Recognition
and Appreciation
WHEREAS The Guttenberg Press has served the City of Guttenberg and surrounding area for the past 120 years, and
WHEREAS Since its founding in 1897 by Sumner Miller, and its continuing succession of owners including the Muschewske brothers, John Sikes and Mike Greibel, G.W. Hunt, Charles Millham, O.W. and Ed Kellogg, the LeMay and Howe families, and since 2015 the sole owner Gary Howe, and
WHEREAS The Press continues to carry on a tradition of progressive activity that has characterized the entire city of Guttenberg since its first Germanic settlers came in the 1830's and 1840's, arriving here via Cincinnati, Ohio and the Western Settlement Society, and
WHEREAS This year's National Newspaper Week's theme of "Real Newspapers ... Real News" for 2017 is reflected weekly in the
continued value of our Guttenberg Press, and
WHEREAS Its unique relevance is reflected with distinction as a watchdog of city government and its proceedings, and superb coverage of community events, human interest stories, and the publication of timely public notices.
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the citizens of Guttenberg, Iowa and the City Council thank the Press for its 120 years of keeping us informed both of the good and the bad. Although the digital age has changed the reporting of the news, it is time to debunk the idea that "Newspapers
Are Dying" when we see our weekly copy of refreshing, timely and real news in the Guttenberg Press.
