Marjorie J. Mergen, 93, of Bloomington, died on Thursday, Aug. 3, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home. 

 

She was born on March 17, 1924, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel (Oates) Chapman.  On Aug. 6, 1942, Marjorie was united in marriage to Eugene C. Mergen, in Prairie du Chien.  Together they owned and operated the Mergen’s Tavern in Glen Haven for many years.  Marjorie later went to work in the office at Pride Seed Corn Company, Glen Haven, until her retirement. 

 

She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington and Glen Haven, its Altar Society, and was a member of the China Painter Club. Marjorie enjoyed china painting, playing cards, and spending time with her family.

 

Survivors include her children Suzanne (Tom) Barr, Dodgeville, Jill (Tom) Errthum, Bloomington, Jack (Mary) Mergen, Muscatine, Iowa, and Daniel Mergen, Maquoketa, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sisters and a brother-in-law Vergie Taylor, Lancaster, Mary Ann (Lavern) Crubel, Bloomington; nieces; nephews; and members of the Mergen family.

 

In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene C. Mergen; a brother and sister-in-law, Keith (Irene) Chapman; a brother-in-law, Herbert Taylor; a grandson, Stephen Barr; and a great-granddaughter, Tegan Emma Copeland.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends may call on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
