Clinton Herbert Strong, 88, died in Bloomington, Ind., on July 4. 

 

He was born in Waukesha, on Aug. 2, 1928, to Clint and Helen Turpak Strong. Clinton graduated from Wisconsin State College at La Crosse with a B.S. in physical education and the University of Iowa with a M.A. in 1955, and his Ph.D in 1961.

 

He was a professor emeritus at Indiana University in the department of kinesiology, formerly known as the department of physical education, and taught there from 1969 until his retirement in 1992. He previously taught at Western Illinois University and East Carolina College.

 

Clinton was renowned for his work with graduate students at Indiana University. His professional contributions centered on how to conduct research, design research tools and evaluate results in health, kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, dance and all other areas of human performance. He served several years as a member of the Education Committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee and was president of Phi Epsilon Kappa in 1987. Clinton also proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

 

He was also actively involved with the American Legion, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Am-Vets, and the V.F.W.

 

Clinton leaves behind his wife of nearly 62 years, Ann Morgan Strong, of Bloomington, Ind.; children Kenneth Strong (Shawn), of Bloomington, Ind., Steve Strong (Michin), of Alexandria, Va., Kathleen Walsh (Michael), of Chalfont, Pa., and Mary Willman, of Bloomington, Ind; grandchildren, Erin, Amy, Megan, Casey, Morgan, Hannah, Nick and Dan; and one great-grandchild, Molly. Also stepsister, Nancy Wilkinson and husband, Ben, of Bloomington; and a niece, Ann Burrows, of Norfolk, Va.

 

He was predeceased by his parents; stepmother, Marie Strong; brother, William Strong; stepsister, Susan Schumacher; and granddaughter, Colleen Walsh.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 10, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Entombment followed in the Valhalla Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging friends and family to consider a contribution in Clinton’s memory to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, Jill’s House or the Indiana University Bloomington Hospital Foundation.
