Hartig Drug opened its Guttenberg doors this month, hosting an open house for its neighbors at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Cornerstone Family Practice on Wednesday, July 19. Owner Dick Hartig, President Keith Bibelhausen and Vice President John Meyer were present to welcome GMH and Cornerstone staff to the new pharmacy, which is located in a former community meeting room in the hospital.

“Hartig Drug was started by my grandfather, Albert J. Hartig, in 1904 on First and Locust Street in Dubuque,” Hartig told The Press. His grandfather, father, brother and son are all pharmacists, and there are 24 Hartig Drug stores in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The new pharmacy created 4.5 new jobs in Guttenberg: three technicians, one full-time pharmacist and a part-time recent graduate of pharmacy school.

Hartig has been providing all the pharmacy services for the hospital since April, and also does so for two other critical access hospitals, leveraging pharmacy staff and talent with 24-hour accessibility. Full-time pharmacist Theresa Eglseder of Luxemburg serves as the pharmacist in charge of the hospital, rounds with physicians, attends meetings, and works with the clinic. “This provides a great continuum of care on a 24/7 basis and is also a financial savings to the hospital,” said Bibelhausen.

Eglseder transferred from Hartig Drug’s Dyersville location, where she worked for 13 years. She’s an Iowa native with parents in Millville, and has four children with her husband, Andy. “I like that I can impact peoples’ lives,” she said. “I like that I can help a mom and a baby with medicine or an older person find a drug plan that they need, and every day is different.”

Hartig offers Medicare D counseling, medpacks for those on multiple medications, and immunizations against influenza, shingles, Hepatitis B, pneumonia, tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough. “Our pharmacies are all connected through a pharmacy network so that our patient database is consistent within the entire network. Prescriptions can be filled at any location,” said Hartig. “We are also very active with medication therapy management, an accelerated program for patient counseling, so if you’re on multiple medications and concerned about the impact one may have on the other, we walk you through exactly what those problems may or may not be and communicate that information to the physician.”

The new pharmacy also offers diabetes education and supplies, over the counter drugs, a complete line of first aid supplies, home health care mobility aids, as well as gifts, cards, candy and more.

“We have a prescription savings card for those who are paying cash for their prescriptions. It provides significant discounts on their prescription prices,” said Bibelhausen, comparing Hartig’s prices with WalMart’s low prescription costs. A rewards program allows customers to earn $5 gift cards for their purchases. “We keep track of it for you and you get the rewards card in the mail. We’ve had tremendous positive feedback and success with that,” Bibelhausen told The Press.

Hartig reported that many prescriptions from Dyersville have been transferred to the new store and are now coming to Guttenberg for their medications.

Hartig Drug is open in Guttenberg from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays.
