Only one longtime boater from the Regal Marina spoke at the Prairie du Chien Common Council meeting Tuesday night, June 6. Craig Smith, the son of the Smith family, which previously owned the marina decades ago, spoke in concern about his boating opportunities in the city and what’s to become of them.

At this time, the city has not determined or officially announced its future plans for the marina. The Regal family was given 30 days to remove its belongings—including docks, outbuildings and equipment—following a May 22 arbitration panel order granting the business’ eviction from the city-owned land. The property must be vacated by Wednesday, June 21, according to the order.

According to Ed Erdos, the family’s spokesperson and close friend, Regal Marine Group “is going to file a motion in circuit court within days requesting modification to the arbitration order to ultimately request an extension” to that 30-day order.

Maiden Voyage Tours seeking a new home
Robert Vavra, captain of Maiden Voyage Tours, attended the council meeting Tuesday night to share his message that he’s looking for a home for his operation. Vavra has been providing river boat tours in the area for 11 years.

Maiden Voyage Tours’ current location is on the McGregor riverfront and, according to a May 23 North Iowa Times article, he said his business is limited space-wise at that location. The article states, “Last year, Vavra built a ‘sucker shack,’ a screened-in, floating restaurant to provide food to his patrons, in addition to a tour of the river. ... Due to other nearby restaurants, he’s also unable to open his floating restaurant to the public as a full-fledged business. He’d like a more permanent home.”

His intentions, by attending a Prairie du Chien council meeting, were similar to his appearance at a May 16 Marquette council meeting.

“He would like to see if we have a place that would suit his business,” explained Prairie du Chien’s Interim City Administrator Tina Fuller. “He just wanted brainstorm (ideas) a little (at the meeting).”

Fuller said the city is looking into Vavra's ideas as to what the city might have available to accommodate Maiden Voyage.

City, county economic development could merge
Local business owner and economic development proponent, Dan Kanis, presented information to the council regarding the possible merger of the city of Prairie du Chien and Crawford County Economic Development Corporations.
