Lucille Mary (Sperfslage) Berns, 84, of Prairie du Chien, passed away in her home Sunday, May 28, after a brief illness. 

 

She grew up on the family farm in rural Earlville. She attended Colesburg High school. She was united in marriage with Al Berns Nov. 26, 1965. They were married 51 years. They had one daughter, Ann. Lucille and her husband worked together in business running a machine shop in Earlville, Iowa, for five years, a jewelry store in Manchester, Iowa, for 12 years and a flower shop (Garden City) and gift shop (Avalo Designs) in Prairie du Chien, for 27 years. She was a member of Holy Family (St Gabriel’s) parish and a former member of the Prairie du Chien Chamber of Commerce.

 

Lucille loved meeting and talking with people in her store. She also loved cooking, sewing, fishing and spending time with her family. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, as well as an optimistic person and will be missed by everyone. 

 

She leaves behind her husband Avalo (Al) Berns, of Prairie du Chien; one daughter, Ann Berns, of Lancaster; and two brothers Herbert Sperfslage, of Dyersville and James Sperfslage, of Earlville; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Mary (Ploesel) Sperfslage and George Sperfslage Sr.; her brother Robert Sperfslage; and her sister-inlaw Helen Sperfslage.

 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiating with inurnment in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Garnavillo, Iowa. Friends may call on Sunday, June 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7 p.m., and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Prairie Catholic School.
