Stargazer lilies like these will be among the plants and flowers for sale at the Memorial Gardens Saturday.

By Correne Martin

The 10th annual St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens perennial plant sale will be Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to noon in the gardens themselves. Come alone, with your friends, families or club members—green thumbs or not—and see what local gardeners have for sale that fascinates you.

This year, the plant sale will be held in conjunction with the Journey Through Time historical open house. It’s also just in time for Mother’s Day, so come early to get your favorites.

Children will have the opportunity to make a free Mother’s Day plantings for their family matriarchs.

Flower and plant varieties for sale at reasonable prices, including lots of different hostas and seedum, coneflowers, dianthus, stella d’oro lilies, vinca (periwinkle) and much more, according to Barb Toberman, one of the organizers. Items can be purchased already potted or simply in bags for planting at home. Also, mulch will be available and interested individuals can buy it by the truck load.

The majority of the proceeds will be put back into the Memorial Gardens, while some will also benefit the Crawford County Master Gardeners. Leftover plants will be used in the city gardens or taken home by the master gardeners.

While the sale is popular among all community members and visitors to Prairie du Chien, local gardeners of all expertise are asked to dig in their yards and then take those extra perennials to the gardens for donation toward the sale. They can be dropped off by the water fountain. Plant donations are accepted now through 8 a.m. the day of the sale.

“We appreciate if people label them so we know what they brought,” added fellow organizer Cathie Nelson, one of about a half-dozen volunteers who will man the plant sale Saturday. “If they’re in pots, they sell better, but we’ll take them in plastic bags too.”

The perennial sale is hosted by the master gardeners volunteers. It is co-sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department.
