Jewell Chappell, 95, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Jewell Janet Hulverson was born on June 14, 1921, to Lawrence and Myra (Wells) Hulverson, on a farm near Elkader. When she was nine months old the family moved to a farm west of Volga City. In 1937, they moved to Volga. She attended country school for eight years, then to high school in Volga, where she graduated with the class of 1939.

She was united in marriage to Glenn Chappell on November 9, 1939, at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, rural Strawberry Point. Five children were born to this union. Together the couple farmed.

In 1961, she starting working at Muters in Guttenberg, where they made speakers for Ford cars. Jewell worked there for six years. She then went to Strawberry Point, where she worked at the Lutheran Home for 15 years, as a med aide and nurse’s aide.

Jewell enjoyed baseball—especially the Chicago Cubs—crocheting, traveling, playing cards and doing word search puzzles.  Her favorite flowers were yellow, pink and lavender roses. In 1999, she moved to an apartment in Guttenberg. Jewell remained a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Volga.

Jewell is survived by her daughters, Janice (Paul Duane) Schmidt of Fridley, MN; Nancy (Larry) Ormston of Elgin; one sister, Jean Ann (Bud) Gilbert of Edgewood; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn, in 1999; two sons, David and James; one daughter, Beverly Jones; one grandchild, baby boy Schmidt; and three sisters, Lorraine Galbreath, Gayle Biedermann and Evelyn Biedermann.

Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017, at the funeral home and one hour before service time at the church on Tuesday. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Volga. Interment was at St. Sebald Lutheran Cemetery, rural Strawberry Point.
