Kathryn F. (Muench) Backes went home to her savior on March 2, 2017, in Kissimmee, FL. She was born in 1945, the daughter of William and Jeanne (Jones) Muench in the small town of Elkader, IA.
After her parents’ death in 1963, she attended airline school. Back then, there was height requirement to be a stewardess and Kathryn was too short so she worked for Eastern Airlines in baggage service. Eastern Airlines was family to Kathryn from 1967 to 1991. She made many good friends and kept them through the years. During those years, Kathryn received many awards and commendations, especially for her work on the wreakage of Flight 401 in the Everglades.
She joined American Airlines in 1991 and was there until her retirement in 2007. Kathryn moved from Miami to Saint Cloud, FL, and loved retirement. She made many new friends and kept in touch with old ones.
Kathryn will be remembered for her bubbly personality and her sparkling brown eyes.
After a private burial in Elkader, she will be celebrated at a service in Lima, IA, a small church Kathryn’s family loves in northern Iowa. Kathryn will stay in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
