The Art Advisory Committee for the public art project to be developed in downtown Guttenberg met on Thursday, Feb. 23, to discuss how to move forward. The project to be placed in downtown Guttenberg is one of 15 being implemented along Scenic Byways throughout Iowa by Scenic Byway partners.

The Committee, made up of local “doers” such as Emily Sadewasser, Juanita Loven, Russell Loven, Lori Wallace, Gary Goyette, Chris Schoen, and many others, has developed a theme to reflect aquatic Mississippi River life befitting of Guttenberg’s “sense of place.”

“Our next step is to find an artist who can bring this theme to life,” said Mallory Marlatt, coordinator for the project through the Northeast Iowa RC&D. The Committee is in touch with a few Iowa artists to gather concepts that can be referenced as they raise the funds needed to fabricate the public art piece.

The group is still working to meet their fundraising goal for the project. The Byways of Iowa Foundation is a major partner for the entire statewide project and has pledged to raise a portion of the funds needed; however, local funds still need to be secured. Those interested in contributing to the project financially can contact Mallory Marlatt, Emily Sadewasser, or Juanita Loven.

Marlatt noted, “This will be a one-of-a-kind art piece that will enhance Guttenberg’s downtown and encourage residents and travelers to slow down and enjoy the view.”
