A former Prairie du Chien man was sentenced in Crawford County Circuit Court March 7 to five years in state prison to be followed by five years of extended supervision for homicide by the intoxicated use of a vehicle in the death of his wife.

William E. Hampton, 55, who recently had been living in Lancaster, had faced up to 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Also as part of his sentence, Hampton must pay court assessments of $3,857.60. He must also submit to a DNA sample. During his extended supervision, Hampton must not possess or consume alcoholic beverages or enter any taverns.

Hampton’s wife, Renee Hampton, 52, died on March 25, 2016 as the result of a crash on March 17, 2016, St. Patrick’s Day.

Hampton was eastbound on Highway 18 near Ward Road in the town of Bridgeport at 6:25 p.m. on March 17, 2016 when the vehicle he was driving spun, crossed the center line and went into the westbound lane backward where it struck another vehicle.

Along with the eventual fatal injuries sustained by Renee Hampton, serious injuries were sustained by her husband, William E. Hampton, as well as the driver of the other vehicle and two passengers.

Michael Larson, a toxicologist with the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, testified that William E. Hampton’s blood alcohol concentration was between 0.24 and 0.26 percent. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

Hampton was found guilty of homicide by the intoxicated use of a vehicle on Jan. 20, 2017.
