Richard Lowell Hildebrand, 86, of Edgewood, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He was born on October 26, 1930, in rural Edgewood, the son of Vallie and Ethel (Hochhaus) Hildebrand. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Littleport High School in 1948. 

Richard served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956, obtaining the rank of Spec. 3rd Class. After his tour of duty, he returned to farm north of Edgewood. Richard was united in marriage to Lucille Mae Spragg on February 14, 1970. They farmed together until they sold the farm in 2003, but remained on the building site. 

Richard enjoyed gardening and fishing. 

Survivors include Richard’s wife, Lucille Hildebrand of Edgewood; two stepchildren, James (Patricia) Spragg of Hudson, Florida, and Alan (Karen) Spragg of Oelwein; nine step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; step-daughter and son-in-law, Judy (Douglas) Unglesbee; a step-great-grandson, Joe Hodge; and his sister, Beverly Hildebrand. 

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, February 24, 2017, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, Iowa. The Reverend Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiated. Interment with military honors followed at  Union Cemetery, rural Littleport, Iowa

There was a visitation from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, February 23, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, Iowa. Friends also called one hour before the service at the church on Friday.
