Four MFL MarMac wrestlers—Ethan Stubbs, Michael Egan, Nathan Johanningmeier and Korby Keehner—are headed to the state wrestling tournament after placing in the top two at the IHSSA Class 1A District 6 tournament at Starmont on Feb. 11.
The 106-pound Stubbs, a freshman with a 37-7 record, punched his ticket to state with a second-place finish.
Egan, who’s a sophomore, also finished second, but at 132 pounds. He has a 46-2 season record and was also a state qualifier last year.
At 152 pounds, Johanningmeier, also a sophomore, won the championship. He had a 41-8 record this season.
Keehner, wrestling at 220 pounds, took first place, as well. The sophomore earned a 43-5 record this year.
Three other MFL MarMac wrestlers—junior Brady Olson (1368), senior Riley Doeppke (145) and sophomore Garret Keehner (170)—placed third in their respective weight classes, just short of advancing to state.
“Overall, they all wrestled really well,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “I liked the way they finished, even when they lost.”
Bachman said a lot of his team’s success is attributable to how close they are and how well they work together.
“They have a lot of heart and work together as a group,” he said. “Everything they do together outside carries over to wrestling.”
MFL MarMac nearly won the district team title, finishing with 91.5 points, just behind Alburnett, with 99.
“We were right there at the top, but came up a little short,” Bachman said.
Four is the most wrestlers MFL MarMac has sent to state in over 10 years, Bachman noted. The record, he added, is six.
This year’s foursome is the youngest, though.
“I don’t think we’ve ever taken three sophomores and a freshman,” he said.
The state tournament will begin Thursday, Feb. 16, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
