Eugene D. Gillitzer, 91, of Prairie du Chien passed away suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Crossing Rivers Health Care in Prairie du Chien. 

 

He was born Aug. 29, 1925, in La Crosse, the son of Aloysius and Anna (McNamara) Gillitzer. He served in the US Army during WWII. He married Mary Lathrop on Sept. 7, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wauzeka. Together they farmed in the Eastman/Seneca area for many years. Gene also worked at Johnson’s One Stop in Seneca for many years. He was a member of the American Legion.

 

 Gene is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Gillitzer, of Prairie du Chien; his children, Rita Doskocil, of Madison, Sharon (Joe) Atkins, of Prairie du Chien, Cecilia (Bill) Doskocil, of La Crosse, Arnold, of Seneca, Clement, of Dodgeville, Gary (Patty), of Boscobel, Veronica (Steve) Roberts, of Marshfield, and Richard (Lynn), of Evansville; his brothers, John (Norma), of Prairie du Chien, and Roger (Janice), of Janesville; 21 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one step-great grandchild. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Bernard; sisters, Mary Agnes Gillitzer, Rita Lester, Anna Marie Lathrop, Catherine McGrath and Loretta Check; two grandsons, Isaac and Eli Gillitzer; a great grandson Alex Roberts; along with daughters-in-law Laura and Mary Gillitzer.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with burial in St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery in Seneca. Military honors will be accorded graveside. Friends may call at St. Gabriel’s Church on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
